This
course is designed for business and technical experts that need to learn the
essential steps of data modeling.
Prerequisites:
Introduction to Business Systems Analysis (TR001) or
equivalent experience.
Description:
This
course presents the terminology and basic concepts of data modeling and
illustrates them using Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERD), Data Structure
Diagrams (DSD) and Data Model Diagrams (DMD). The entire data modeling process
is presented, from conceptual modeling, to normalization, to the logical data
model. The course finishes by presenting options for implementing the logical
data model as a relational database model. Hands-on workshops in a JAD format
are used to reinforce concepts.
Objectives:
Upon
successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
·
Define
the terminology associated with data modeling.
·
Identify
and create the diagrams to create a conceptual and logical data model.
·
List
the steps involved in creating a conceptual and logical data model.
·
Identify
how normalization is used to turn a conceptual data model into a logical data
model.
·
Describe
and perform the first three normal forms.
·
Identify
the options available when implementing a logical model into a relational
database.
